Digimarc Barcodes are an imperceptible pattern that can be embedded into all marketing materials, including packaging, displays, ads in magazines, circulars, radio, and television. The pattern is not visible with the human eye, but with generic digital imagers such as used in cell phones and barcode scanners they can be read.

At its simplest Digimarc encodes a “water mark code” that is undetectable by the human eye throughout the graphics on the product. Although in the image below the Digimarc code is represented as a bar code this not strictly true, but a Digimarc enabled barcode reader retrieves the information from the 'watermark' and the Digimarc decoder will output data similar to if a barcode has been read. The Digimarc encoding is a proprietary code that Digimarc is licensing.
